How to Feel Good Durning the Holiday Season
Tis the season of holiday parties and family get togethers! I love parties and dinners, lets be honest, this whole season can be a challenge to the waistline. I am a firm believer in moderation, but 2 to 3 parties and sometimes more in a single week is not what I call moderation. It is easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit (aka champagne!), forget about our meal plans and wake up feeling guilty and gross. A little bit of planning and consideration helps me enjoy the moment, but also feel good throughout the season.
Here is what I do.
1. I get my workout in. Usually the day of a party I do an extra intense workout.
2. I never go to a party hungry. I usually drink a Shakeology on the way to the party. If I go to the party hungry I will make poor food choices. Shakeology is a dense nutrition shake and I make a yummy one before I go that not only satisfies my sweet tooth but also keeps me full.
3. I also drink a lot of water the day of and during the party. I decide before I get there how much alcohol I will have and alternate between a glass of wine and a glass of water. My husband and I do this anyways because one of us has to drive home. Alternating driving duties helps create balance in our partnership and also gives our bodies a night off from processing alcohol.
Portion control is key as is planning ahead. If I am going to a holiday dinner, I make sure I do not overload my plate. Since I do not bring my portion control containers, I use a few quick tricks to make sure I stay on track. I use my fist to measure out my carbs, the palm of my hand for protein and I load up on the veggies. This helps me ensure I am getting enough food but also I won't overeat. I know how tempting it can be to overeat but I always think about how I feel afterward which is usually stuffed and sick to my stomach. You can always have more ;)
This season is about celebrating the hard work we have done throughout the year. I know firsthand from my clients the kinds of struggles they have faced and overcome throughout the year. It isn't easy being a mom, working, and creating balance and structure for your family. Let's celebrate the holidays in a way that honors the work we've done, lifts up our spirits and sets us up for a great start to 2018!
